Los obstáculos para la libertad según la doctrina de Gregorio de Nyssa

Abstract

Para Gregorio, el hombre se define esencialmente como un “ser libre”. Esta afirmación la encontramos desde su primera obra, el De virginitate, donde afirma que el hombre, en tanto imagen y semejanza de Dios, posee “la soberana libertad de elección” (tò autexoúsion tês proairéseos). Gregorio sostiene que el hombre solo es verdaderamente libre cuando es el dueño y la causa de sus actos, es decir, cuando posee plena capacidad de autodeterminación. Y, plantea, existen, con todo, una serie de obstáculos que le impiden elegir libremente y “poder alcanzar al objeto verdaderamente deseable” (tó óntos epithymetón). Así, analizaremos los obstáculos a los que se refiere Gregorio y el modo de solución. Tales obstáculos pueden ser clasificados en dos grandes grupos: internos y externos.

For Gregory, man is essentially defined as a “free being”. We find this affirmation since his first work, De virginitate, where he affirms that man, as an image and likeness of God, possesses “the sovereign freedom of choice” (tò autexoúsion tês proairéseos). Gregory maintains that man is truly free only when he is the owner and cause of his acts, that is, when he possesses full capacity for self-determination. And, he argues, there are, however, a series of obstacles that prevent him from freely choosing and “being able to reach the truly desirable object” (tó óntos epithymetón). Thus, we will analyze the obstacles to which Gregory refers and the mode of solution. These obstacles can be classified into two large groups: internal and external.
