Las ocupaciones cerámicas tempranas en cuevas y aleros en la Puna de Jujuy, Argentina - Inca Cueva, Alero 1

Abstract

Rock shelter 1 is found on the left edge of the Inca Cave Gorge (23° South latitude, 65° longitude, 27' w). It is a chasmw ith pictographs ascribed by C. Aschero to the "B" Stylistic group (late Preceramic to Early Ceramic Period). With the objective of defining the function of the Early Ceramic sites in caves and rock shelters and their relation with other semi-permanent settlements of the region, we have carried out systematic excavation by means of a previous trial excavation realized by C. Aschero and H. Yacobaccio. These two field studies were undertaken by enlarging the field coverage throughout the exposed north and south levels. Levels 5 and 6 showed evidences of an Early Ceramic Occupation with a thick pasted, reddish and very crumbly pottery. Radiocarbon dating of level 5 charcoal gave a date of 2900±70 BP (Beta-2516), the oldest for this sector of the puna. In this paper, this site is presented for the first time and diffractograms of the ceramic and other local materials of the zone are included by Dr. M. Iñiguez of the Geological Investigations Center of La Plata.

El Alero 1 se encuentra en el borde izquierdo de la Garganta de la Cueva del Inca (23° L.S., 65° 27' L.W.). Se trata de una sima con pictografías adscritas por C. Aschero al grupo estilístico "B" (Periodo Precerámico tardío a Cerámico Temprano). Con el objetivo de definir la función de los yacimientos de Cerámica Temprana en cuevas y abrigos rocosos y su relación con otros asentamientos semipermanentes de la región, hemos llevado a cabo una excavación sistemática mediante un ensayo de excavación previo realizado por C. Aschero y H. Yacobaccio. Estos dos estudios de campo se realizaron ampliando la cobertura del campo a lo largo de los niveles expuestos norte y sur. Los Niveles 5 y 6 mostraron evidencias de una Ocupación Cerámica Temprana con una cerámica de pasta espesa, rojiza y muy quebradiza. La datación por radiocarbono del carbón vegetal de nivel 5 arrojó una fecha de 2900±70 AP (Beta-2516), la más antigua para este sector de la puna. En este trabajo se presenta por primera vez este sitio y se incluyen difractogramas de la cerámica y otros materiales locales de la zona realizados por el Dr. M. Iñiguez del Centro de Investigaciones Geológicas de La Plata.
